The main thought process that goes into deciding what yarn bases I dye here at Sprigs and Stone, is quality; and how enjoyable it is to work with. I also consider the yarn's versatility of potential usage. And last but not least, the wear ability of the finished garment.
Season dependent, the bases I carry may vary slightly. But listed below are my current, and consistently used yarn bases. I intend to dye and stock these regularly.
Having knit and worn garments with all of my featured yarn bases myself, I can confidently say through my personal experiences, all of these were a joy to make with. And even more so a joy to wear! I wear my knits regularly so comfort, functionality, and longevity are key. All are highly valued attributes for me when choosing what yarn bases I offer at Sprigs and Stone Yarn.
74% Baby Suri Alpaca, 26% Mulberry silk.
328 yards, 50 grams per skein.
Suri fluff is an incredibly soft and supple yarn base. It provides a wonderful halo to any project on its own single or held double. And especially when it is held with another yarn. This is my favorite fluffy fiber to use in exchange of mohair for sweaters and shawl projects!
80% Superwash Merino wool, 20% Nylon.
2 ply firmly twisted.
400 yards, 100 grams per skein.
A true classic fingering base. The 2 plies plump and bloom wonderfully to create a soft and full, yet lightweight fabric. It has added strength with the nylon, making this not just great for sweaters, but also socks!
85% Superwash Merino wool, 15% Donegal NEP.
438 yards, 100 grams per skein.
This base drinks up the dye beautifully, while the tweed flecks woven into the wool fibers resist the color, creating a classic Irish wool effect. It is perfect for any sweater project, and especially compliments cables and textured fabrics.
70% Superwash Merino wool, 20% Yak, 10% Nylon.
3 ply high twist
437 yards, 100 grams per skein.
The stunning rich grey undertones of the yak content, helps to create very deep and lush jewel tones. Yak has been shown to perform just as well or better compared to merino wool in regards to strength and softness. Mer-Yak has wonderful stitch definition, really showcasing colorwork, cables, and textured fabrics. A wonderful, versatile base that can be used for garments, shawls, and socks.
60% Superwash Merino wool, 20% Yak, 20% Silk.
4 ply high twist
231 yards, 100 grams per skein.
By far my favorite DK base. As previously noted with the Mer-Yak fingering base, it has the same rich qualities and versatility of uses. The silk component that is in this DK base, further enhances the luster and jewel tone effect. Silk adds additional strength to the yarn, while also creating a very flattering drape effect. The qualities combined make this yarn base a wonderful choice for any garment AND shawls!
75% Superwash Merino Wool
4 ply high twist
250 yards, 100 grams per skein.
A true staple, workhorse yarn base that has all the versatile qualities I value in a yarn! Super soft and yet very durable due to the high twist ply, and the added nylon content. The nylon in this DK also makes this base a stellar choice for super cozy socks! I have also found my ribbing on knits has held up considerably better because of the additional durability and stretch the nylon provides. Can not recommend this base enough for pretty much all of the things!
